General Guidelines
Passengers are requested to attach a label with
their own name, surname and address to each bag and to make sure
to have baggage claim receipts after the check-in time. Receipts
are necessary for the baggage identification on arrival.
The dimensions and weights of checked luggage may vary by airline,
therefore you should contact your airline directly for information
on maximum weight allowances and related fees.
The baggage must not exceed the maximum weight limit allowed by
the airlines, which corresponds to the chosen class. In the case
of exceeding weight limits, there will be an overweight charge.
On national flights it is possible to check-in up to two bags
(Piece System), besides the hand baggage. The International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulation states that the dimension
of the hand baggage can not exceed 115 cm (length + width + height).
On international flights the baggage weight must not exceed the
maximum weight limit (Weight System), which depends on the type of
ticket and destination. Generally in economy class the weight
limit is up to 20 kg and in business class up to 30 kg
Animals
When you make your reservation it is necessary
to inform the airline of the presence of an animal and verify the
regulation for animal treatment on arrival in the destination
country (in several countries the animal can be put in quarantine
for up to three months). As a general rule, a dog must be
vaccinated against the basic illnesses. Animals medical records
and a certificate of good health are required. All airlines allow
small dogs to travel on board beside passengers, as long as they
are in a cage with a waterproof bottom (the cage must be big
enough to let the animal move around, but it must not exceed the
following size 47 x 25 x 32 cm. and weigh more than 10 kg). If the
weight of the cage and the animal is more than 10 kg, then the
animal must travel in the cargo hold. The animal will be boarded
with the cargo and will travel in a cage provided by the airline.
Special cases
Certain animal species (birds, fishes, frogs, land turtles) can be
brought into Italy only if they are in possession of an origin
certificate released by their country.
For protected species (parrots, water turtles, ornamental fishes,
etc.) it is necessary to show a CITES certificate (which
authorizes the export of the species).
Seeing eye dogs
Seeing eye dogs will be loaded with the passenger as long as they
are on a leash and have a muzzle: in this case their passage is
free, but the airline must be informed of their presence at the
time of the reservation.
